Estimates for planning
Every calculator on Materials Calculators produces a material or quantity estimate for planning. We show the formula and a worked example on each page so you can see exactly how the number is reached — but an estimate is only as good as the figures you put in and the assumptions behind it.
Real-world coverage, density, and waste vary by product, supplier, and site conditions. Where a figure is a material property rather than fixed geometry — a density, a coverage rate, a bag yield — we make it an editable input and tell you to use the number from your product or supplier. Buy a little extra, and confirm quantities with your supplier before ordering.
Not professional advice
These tools are not engineering, structural, or building-code advice and do not replace a licensed professional. Several calculators (stairs, decks, footings, rebar, retaining walls, slabs) carry their own notes because the structural design — sizing, spans, reinforcement, footings, frost depth — is governed by your local code and an engineer’s judgment, not a quantity estimate. For anything structural or safety-related, consult a qualified professional and your local building department.

How we keep it accurate
Accuracy is the point of this site. Our methodology page explains how each formula is chosen, sourced, and checked before it’s published. If you spot something that looks wrong, we want to know — see the about page.
