Which calculator for which job
Pick by the surface you're laying. A paver patio takes two calculators, because the base goes down before the pavers.
- Paver patio or walkway: the base first: Paver Base Calculator
- Pavers sit on a compacted gravel base topped with a thin, roughly 1-inch sand bed. It gives the base stone in cubic yards and tons, plus the bedding sand.
- Paver patio or walkway: the pavers: Paver Calculator
- Pavers are bought by the piece: patio area × (1 + waste) ÷ one paver's area. Allow about 10% for cuts, and more for diagonal or herringbone patterns.
- Asphalt driveway: Asphalt Calculator
- Asphalt is ordered by the ton. Tons = area × thickness × density ÷ 2,000, with hot-mix at about 145 lb per cubic foot compacted.
- Gravel driveway or path: Crushed Stone Calculator
- Crushed stone is sold by the ton and spread by volume. Use 4 inches or more for a driveway or path, built up in compacted lifts, with an editable density for your stone.
- Concrete driveway or patio slab: Concrete Slab Calculator
- Cubic yards of ready-mix and bags of mix. A patio or walkway is typically 4 inches thick and a driveway 5–6 inches; reinforcement and base are a code and engineering call.
