Square Footage Calculator
Square footage is length × width. Enter an area's two sides in feet and you'll get square feet, plus square yards and square meters.

- Square meters

How it’s calculated
Area = length × width, both sides in feet, giving square feet. Square yards = square feet ÷ 9 (a yard is 3 feet, so a square yard is 9 square feet). Square meters = square feet × 0.0929. For an L-shaped space, split it into rectangles, work out each, and add them up.
Worked example
A 12 ft × 10 ft room: 12 × 10 = 120 square feet. That's 120 ÷ 9 ≈ 13.33 square yards, or 120 × 0.0929 ≈ 11.15 square meters.
FAQs
- How do I find the square footage of an L-shaped or odd room?
- Break it into rectangles, calculate each one's length × width, and add the results. For a circle, use π × radius²; for a triangle, ½ × base × height.
- What's the difference between square feet and linear feet?
- Linear feet measure length along a single line. Square feet measure area — length × width — so they describe a surface like flooring or a wall, not just a distance.
- How do I convert square feet to square yards?
- Divide by 9. There are 3 feet in a yard, so a square yard is 3 × 3 = 9 square feet. Carpet was traditionally sold by the square yard and some installers still quote that way, but most US retailers now price it per square foot.
