Sod Calculator

Sod is sold by the pallet or the roll. Enter your lawn area and which one your supplier uses, and this gives the count with a trimming allowance.

Extra for trimming around curves and edges; 5% is typical.

How it’s calculated

Pieces = area × (1 + waste) ÷ piece coverage, rounded up. A pallet covers about 450 sq ft and an individual roll about 10 sq ft, though both vary by farm and region. Add about 5% for trimming around curves, beds, and edges.

Worked example

A 30 × 20 ft lawn = 600 sq ft, + 5% = 630 ÷ 450 ≈ 1.4 → 2 pallets. (As rolls: 630 ÷ 10 = 63 rolls.)

FAQs

How big is a pallet of sod?
Usually around 450 square feet, but pallets range from about 400 to 500 sq ft depending on the farm and grass type. Check with your supplier and adjust the figure if needed.
Pallet or rolls — which should I buy?
Pallets are cheaper per square foot and best for big open areas; individual rolls are easier to handle for small or awkward spaces. Many suppliers sell both.
How much extra sod should I order?
About 5% covers trimming around curves, trees, and beds. Lay sod the same day it's delivered — it's perishable and dries out fast on the pallet.
